Dear Delaware Community,
As stewards of our historic downtown and advocates for its preservation and prosperity, Main Street Delaware has been diligently working to address an imminent challenge facing our community: the proposed installation of commercial gas meters and associated infrastructure on the fronts of buildings along North Sandusky Street.
In December 2021, Main Street Delaware, in collaboration with downtown business owners, building proprietors, and community members, petitioned Delaware City Council to create legislation to override Columbia Gas of Ohio’s plan to place gas meters on the primary facades of our cherished historic buildings. Even with Main Street Delaware and the City of Delaware working together, we find ourselves in a challenging position as we approach the implementation phase of this project.
While Main Street Delaware has ardently advocated for the relocation of gas meters to the rear facades of buildings, the move from front to back required unanimous consent from all stakeholders, which proved unattainable. Despite our efforts, we were unable to secure the 100% agreement necessary to implement our alternative solution.
It is crucial to underscore that our objection to the current proposal stems from several key concerns:
- Historic Preservation: Placing utility meters on primary facades directly contradicts state and national preservation standards established to protect the historical integrity of our downtown. The Sandusky Street Historic District, recognized by the National Park Service, safeguards the essence of our community and provides economic benefits to stakeholders through adherence to these standards.
- Public Safety: The presence of utility meters on high-traffic primary facades poses a significant public safety hazard. With the bustling activity of outdoor dining areas, community events, and the designation of our downtown as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), the risk of accidents and injuries escalates.
- Economic Impact: Utility meters encroaching upon valuable patio space diminishes the potential revenue and vitality of street-level businesses. This reduction in outdoor seating capacity directly impacts the financial viability of affected establishments, undermining the economic vitality of our downtown.
- Aesthetic Degradation: Furthermore, the placement of meters on primary facades invites the accumulation of refuse, snow, ice, and landscape waste, detracting from the charm and allure of our historic downtown.
It is imperative to emphasize that the impending installation of gas meters on primary facades represents a substantial disruption to our downtown community. As residents, business owners, and stakeholders, our collective voice carries immense weight in shaping the future of our beloved downtown Delaware.
We urge each member of our community to stand in solidarity as we continue to navigate this challenge. Your input, engagement, and advocacy are invaluable as we strive to uphold the historic character, safety, and prosperity of our downtown.
In closing, while we recognize the importance of the essential work undertaken by Columbia Gas of Ohio to enhance the safety and efficiency of natural gas service, we also implore all building owners to work with Columbia Gas of Ohio to ensure meters do not mar the aesthetics and accessibility of our downtown.
Together, let us preserve the essence of downtown Delaware and ensure its enduring vibrancy for generations to come.
