New Digs for Main Street
In 2019, a proposal to tear down the long vacant Engineering Building, at 20 E. William, was met with public outcry and ultimately refused by the Historic Preservation Commission. Main Street Delaware stepped in to save this historic place, leasing the building from the City of Delaware to create a Welcome Center for the community!
Our goal is to restore this stately building into a visible landmark and resource in our historic downtown that everyone will be comfortable visiting. We envision a “front porch” for the City and County in Delaware; a place where community members and visitors stop in for information and hospitality. The building will also house public restrooms, as well as much needed office and storage space for Main Street Delaware and other organizations with complementary goals. Main Street Delaware’s goal is to complete this project and move in by Summer 2021.
With estimated project expenses of $210,000.00, we anticipate fully funding this project through preservation grants, community grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations.
Join us in our mission of creating a vibrant downtown experience by making a donation. Every gift will help sustain Delaware’s lively spirit, now and well into the future.
